The Tozzi One + ESP32 speaker integrates two remarkable, proven technologies to create the world's first wireless multi-room speaker system for open-source home automation.
As an avid audiophile and enthusiast of home automation, I found myself craving an alternative to the big-name companies and proprietary apps (looking at you Sonos) for multi-room audio speakers. As you may have also discovered, there are many posts on the Home Assistant community, Reddit and even audiophile forums where individuals describe building their own speakers from scratch. Comments include offers to purchase fully-assembled speakers if someone would build for them. Most of us do not have access to woodworking or 3D printing equipment. Many prefer to buy vs. build.
Although DIY builders are just beginning to experiment with 3D printing, it turns out plastic-based enclosures are neither new, nor lacking in quality. Mark Fenlon, a noted engineer in audio and speaker design, developed the Tozzi One in 2015!
Specifically engineered for both high-performance audio and aesthetics, Mark designed a speaker enclosure for 3D polymer printing. And his speakers performed exceptionally well, often to the great surprise of reviewers and audiophiles. But pricing ($450/pair) and the use of plastics for a "high-end" speaker failed to gain acceptance in the market. His ground-breaking design was discontinued within 3 years.
About the same time, a company called Espressif Systems introduced a low-cost microcontroller with integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The Espressif controller has been used by thousands of consumer electronics since 2008. (Take a peek at your router's list of WiFi clients for "espressif.")
Their product continued to evolve into ESP32, a dual-core processor board integrating easily to a growing list of peripherals. Thanks to Andriy at Sonocotta, we have a small board that connects our WiFI to high-performance DACs (digital-to-audio decoders) and D-class amplifiers -- all the electronics necessary to wirelessly stream audio and drive full-size speakers with exceptional quality.
This is the first prebuilt wireless speaker you can purchase for use with Home Assistant.
Although the Tozzi One has been discontinued, I have a *very* limited stock to modify and sell, while we continue to develop a lineup of additional speakers for use with Home Assistant.

Because the speaker enclosure is a Tozzi One, most of the images are promotional photos. This section provides actual images of our modified speaker. Note the WiFi antenna and power supply connectors now occupy the location of the original wire binding posts.
Built for fast and easy integration into Home Assistant.
Squeezelite firmware (pre-installed) makes connecting to Music Assistant a breeze.
Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect and Bluetooth devices can be quickly paired too.
Plug in the power supply, connect your laptop or phone to the speaker's built-in WiFi.
Open a browser. Enter your home WiFi and password. Click on REBOOT.
Open Music Assistant player settings and click on ADD to auto discover your speaker.
